The topic for discussion was \u2018Developing across borders: Delivering the built environment in a globalised world.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Developing across borders: Delivering the built environment in a globalised world\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/797009252?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mat\u00edas began with an introduction to Hyphen, discussing our global reach and local expertise, as well as insight into the Latin American region and its varying local conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key principles for cross-border projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Identifying three key principles to understand and follow when delivering projects across borders, Mat\u00edas said it is important to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preserve the culture and reputation of your firm by collaborating with like-minded partners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify and embrace regional differences and similarities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess international financial governance and tax structures (Agree where you\u2019ll get paid).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Mat\u00edas explains, \u201cIt is critical to understand local codes for each country you work in\u201d, with key similarities and differences across borders. \u201cFor example, codes in Uruguay and Brazil are similar, while Chile is very different. It\u2019s a matter of balancing political and environmental drivers with co-compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Middle-sized cities and the pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion section of the webinar led to some interesting talking points, starting with the impact of the pandemic on international architectural and engineering practices. Mat\u00edas explains that it has had an interesting impact on middle-sized cities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dIn Latin America, professionals used to move to the big metropolises to find work. Through the pandemic, more traditional companies realised that remote working and collaborating through a screen is efficient and added a value to middle-sized cities. People realised they could live in these places and have a better work-life balance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Collaboration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another talking point was the importance of collaboration with local allies when working on projects in locations where you do not have a direct presence. Mat\u00edas says, \u201cFor us it\u2019s a matter of finding the right alliances and local partners. In some countries we have several partners, for different sectors. It\u2019s a matter of understanding what you need, looking for cultural similarities and learning from the process at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Working with local communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early conversations with local authorities and communities were also identified as essential in project delivery across borders. Addressing this, Mat\u00edas offers his insight into why this is especially key for data centres:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLatin America is an immature market for data centres. There is an educational bridge, where most local authorities don\u2019t understand what a data centre is and how it works. The local communities don\u2019t necessarily understand it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSit down with the local authorities, explain the process, and how it will benefit and impact the community. It\u2019s relevant with the permitting process too. Addressing communities and authorities early, is key.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research, research, research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mat\u00edas continues, \u201cEarly investment in terms of researching the market is important. We have worked with clients who have wanted to implement a design into multiple markets simultaneously. Studying local codes, drivers, materials, political issues etc will only make the process more efficient and avoid mistakes and high risk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Client specific expertise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mat\u00edas concluded the webinar with his final take home message \u2013 to become a client specific expert:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is irrelevant whether you have an office in that place, if you bring quality, consistency and efficiency, while understanding local drivers and compliance.
