We are pleased to announce that Hyphen is now in Mexico City, opening our 10th office across the group and second in Latin America.
We’ve been working in Mexico since 2014, delivering more than a dozen architectural projects in the luxury retail, data centre and workspace sectors across cities including Acapulco, Cancun, Santiago de Querétaro, Puebla, Monterrey, Veracruz and Mexico City.
The launch in Mexico follows the success of Hyphen’s Santiago team, based in Chile, which tripled in size in 2022 and led to Hyphen being listed in Building Design’s Top 10 Practices in South and Central America. From its Chilean base, the team has delivered projects across the Latin American region, in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Aruba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and Brazil.
Hyphen CEO, Eddie Miles, says: “The time is now right to have a second permanent base in Latin America. Mexico is becoming increasingly important to our clients, and there is an opportunity to help them navigate this new market. This is what we have done successfully in Europe and Chile, by building new offices around local architects, around their knowledge and expertise. Think global but act local is very much Hyphen’s ethos.
“It is very exciting to open an office in a new country, because of the cultural benefits and fresh perspectives that this brings. No one country has a monopoly on the best way to do things, which means you can’t assume that what works in the UK, Spain or Chile will work in Mexico. You need to listen to what the locals tell you – their expertise is crucial.”
Jimena Etchegaray (pictured) has been appointed as office head and will lead Hyphen’s operations in Mexico. She will also work closely with directors Eva Diego and Matías Menichetti on group strategy for the Latin American region.
Jimena originally trained as an architect in Chile and has significant experience in interiors. She is an expert in sustainability with advanced green building knowledge and expertise in the LEED and WELL rating systems. Jimena most recently worked as a regional manager in the workspace sector, ensuring all projects in Latin America met wellness and sustainability targets.
Eva Diego, director, says, “This is a very exciting milestone in our international expansion plans and enables us to offer a wider and better service to our clients. We completed our first project in Mexico (in Cancun) almost a decade ago. Since then, client interest in Mexico has grown significantly, as has its potential as part of our strategic network.
“We are very pleased to welcome Jimena as the office head for our newest team. Her local expertise will be invaluable for our work in Mexico and the region. She also brings significant insight into sustainable design that will be incredibly useful for the group in our plans towards achieving net zero and advising our clients on their sustainability journeys.”
