CyrusOne

Hyphen has been supporting CyrusOne with their Europe-wide roll out of hyperscale data centres since 2017.

Our role started by adapting their US design concept to the European market and subsequently preparing designs for a series of projects in Dublin, Amsterdam and London.

We have carried out technical due diligence and test-fit exercises for potential projects and undertaken concept design, permitting, technical design and construction support for built projects.

Sustainability

Our work with CyrusOne has involved supporting the DCs for Bees All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, an initiative to help reverse declines in pollinating insects and educate industry professionals on their importance. One way of doing this is by creating wild spaces around data centres, where bees can thrive. We were proud to have worked on the Dublin I data centre campus in Grange Castle, which did just this, surrounding the site with wildflower meadows.

This project gained industry recognition as a finalist at the DCD Awards 2021 and winner of the Data Centre Sustainable Construction Award at the Data Cloud Awards 2022.

Charlotte Simpson-Munro, Associate at Hyphen, says “From a planning perspective, vertical greening was essential to help break up the mass of key facades and implement the plan. The landscape architect considered how they could make minor tweaks to the specified varieties of plants to promote bee pollination. They were able to work these in with other evergreen species so that the greening is proactive all year round.

“The main goal of this initiative is to help restore local ecosystems. Ireland is experiencing huge decreases in their numbers of bumble bees and some species are being threatened with extinction. This is not just a problem Ireland is facing – we are globally reliant on pollinators. As designers, we can easily make small changes that have very proactive results.”

Further industry recognition was received in February 2024, when the London IV data centre achieved BREEAM Very Good certification from the world’s leading science-based suite of validation and certification systems for a sustainable built environment.

The projects

Amsterdam I

Service: Full architectural design

IT capacity: 27MW

Building area: 28,650 sqm

Hyphen masterplanned the design for two new 27MW buildings on a brownfield site to the West of Amsterdam city centre. We carried out full architectural design from concept through to completion of the first building in 2020. Our work included design development, permitting support, presentations to the local authority design committee, construction support and site inspections.

Dublin I

Service: Full architectural design, Contract administration

IT capacity: 54MW

Building area: 19,200 sqm

This project involved the masterplanning of the campus, with an overall IT capacity of 54MW, permitting for the first two data centre buildings and a sub-station.  Hyphen has produced full construction design and carried out construction support for the first building.

The project supported Ireland’s DCs for Bees initiative and involved the creation of pollinator-friendly wild spaces surrounding the site. Dublin I also gained industry recognition, as a finalist at the DCD Awards 2021.

London III

Service: Architectural fit-out D&B

IT capacity: 9MW

Building area: 8,600 sqm

Hyphen worked with CyrusOne and the developer SEGRO to adapt a spec-built warehouse building for data centre use. This project features indirect air cooling and delivers a total of 9MW IT power in two design & build fit-out phases, the first of which was completed in 2020.

London IV

Service: Architectural fit-out D&B

IT capacity: 18MW

Area: 17,000 sqm

New-build data centre within an existing building shell, including cooling configured on a resilient ring chilled water system.

Hyphen worked with CyrusOne and the developer SEGRO to develop a purpose-built data centre shell building and a technical design for the fit-out by a design & build contractor. This project will deliver a total of 18MW IT power with modular power and cooling plant to be installed within enclosed plant yards.

London V

Service: Architectural fit-out D&B

IT capacity: 18MW

Area: 12,060 sqm

New data centre building with shell and core design construction by a developer.

Hyphen worked with CyrusOne to develop a purpose-built data centre shell building and a technical design for the fit-out by a design & build contractor.
