Hyphen worked with Primark to transform Madrid’s historic Cine Salamanca into the brand’s second flagship store in the capital, adapting more than 3,000 sqm across five floors while respecting the character of the protected 1935 building.
Originally designed by Francisco Alonso Martos, the building had previously served as a cinema, nightclub and commercial space. Its protected status meant the project required careful coordination between Primark’s requirements, the existing architecture and local regulations.
Hyphen was involved from the early stages of the project, supporting negotiations and development before continuing through construction. Our Madrid team worked closely with Primark’s design team and local authorities, producing the drawings and reports needed for licensing, tender and construction, while also managing progress on site.
Several original elements were retained and restored, including the marble stairs, façade awnings and columns from the former projection room. The completed store also makes use of the building’s central atrium and existing skylight, retaining a connection with its cinema heritage while creating a new retail destination within Madrid’s Salamanca district.
